THE MIRACLE GASTHAUS

Have I talked about the doors in Germany? They are unique to say the least. Here is the door in our room. You can either open it from the top...have it ajar from the top...by turning the door handle so the handle is all the way up and then rock the door towards you

or you can open the same door in the usual open door manner...all you do is rotate the handle to the down position. Brilliant!

Here's a bottle of water given to us in our room...I love the pretty blue color!

So we took off down the road heading to the Czech Republic. We had quite a time maneuvering around on what Dad calls "goat paths". Our gps system is a piece of scheisse and it either got us lost or it decided to go to sleep most of the day. Luckily we had an old fashioned map and found the border.

We stopped over the border and got some Czech kronas or whatever they are called. It was a shady looking rip-off joint, but we needed cash and today is Sunday. We headed towards Korvacy Vary (or whatever the spelling is) to go to the beer spa...where you sit in a vat of hops, yeast, other beer ingredients, and you can drink all the beer you want. You stay in the tub for 20 min. then lay down on a bed of straw....I guess to be Bohemian or something, then you can have more beer and beer bread. Well, this sounded "unique" so we got to Karlovy Vary and spent 2 hours plus looking for the beer spa...I kept asking people and they weren't very friendly or helpful...but finally we found it but there is no parking anywhere here....I went over to check it out anyway. The lady there that runs it was a little on the rough side and missing a few teeth...but we were still (sort of) game. But we had to be sure we could find a hotel...and the city was surprisingly big...and congested and very hard to get around. The lady at the beer spa place said to check out the hotel up the street...it looked like a flop house. So I went across the street to another not so great looking hotel. They wanted close to $200 for a room there and we could park our car on an elevator or something like that...I don't think the translation was so good! Anyway, by then we were so sick of the city stuff...it wasn't a very nice looking place...and we were sick of not being able to find a place...so we went down the road to a different city that Dad had read something about. So we drove for about another hour to Marianske or whatever it was called...and looked for a hotel...but when I asked people for help, they weren't friendly at all ...even rude...and after about 1 1/2 hours of trying to find a place, we decided to get the hell out of the Czech Republic because the people were nasty, the cities were nasty, and the countryside wasn't much to write home about.

We saw this sign along the way...the second word pretty much sums up the country:

I don't like your jerk-off (jirkov) face, I don't like your jerk-off name....

We did stop somewhere in the Czech Rep. and had lunch. I had some garlic soup...with broth and a lot of garlic cloves...it was good. We had some pork and sauerkraut...and the kraut was really good. Anyway we blew into Czech Republic in the morning and we blew out the same evening...not impressed! So we left Marianske and relied on the gps (goat path system) to get us to Germany and to civilization again. But it took us on the most remote trails...that took forever...through deep forests of darkness.

It was getting dark...and late ( as you can see above) and we were so tired. We had been driving for almost 12 hours...way too much. We finally arrived in Germany and we were very happy about that. Again, it was dark out and all of a sudden in the middle of nowhere...out in the country...was this nice gasthaus all lit up...and the door was open! It was a miracle!!! So we went in and they were so nice...it was 8:45 PM and their restaurant was closing at 9:00 but they let us come in and have dinner anyway!
The room was very nice, too....very clean, as usual. The bathroom fixtures were a unique color, though!

We took some Tums to settle our stomachs and went to bed...too tired to post to the blog. The next morning, before we left ...in daylight...I took a picture of this place:

  1. I laughed out loud several times while reading this post. Tell me that when you were ready to leave the lunch place, that Dad told the waiter, "Czech, please!".

  2. The real question here is....was the Kraut better than Frank's??

  3. Ha, Matt! Dad must have forgotten his manners! It would have been great, tho!
Sara...to tell the truth...it was very close, but we still think Franks is better. The really good part about the Czech kraut is that it was extra sour...so extra fermented. I may have to experiment with my next batch of kraut and let it ferment for longer. _Mom
